Mapping Research and Innovation in the Republic of Mozambique

A new report on research and innovation in Mozambique was launched on 18 February by UNESCO the Islamic Development Bank IsDB and the Government of Mozambique It is the 9th volume of UNESCOs Global Observatory of Science Technology and Innovation Policy Instruments GOSPIN country profiles series The publication is the result of a joint effort by UNESCO and the Islamic Development Bank IsDB to support Member States in strengthening national Science Technology and Innovation STI systems and build robust evidencebased and inclusive STI policies The publication Mapping Research and Innovation in the Republic of Mozambique available in English and Portuguese describes the STI landscape in Mozambique and identify areas for strategic investment in STI in the country The study provides evidence and data for the revision of the national STI policy and strategy as part of the countrys transition from a lowincome country to a lower middleincome status It includes a list of key recommendations for STI policy development and STI investment notably in three strategic sectors STEM and STI policy Oil and Gas and Agriculture The study was developed based on UNESCOs GOSPIN methodology analyzing STI systems in different national contexts Ten volumes of the GOSPIN country profile series were published providing key information on STI governing bodies legal frameworks and policy instruments The publication was launched in the presence of His Excellency Dr Bandar M H Hajjar President Islamic Development Bank highlevel officials from UNESCO HQ and Maputo Office the IsDB the Minister of Science Technology and Higher Education and other highlevel government officials and representatives of STI institutions in the country In total around 150 participants joined the launch event His Excellency Dr Bandar MHHajjar in delivering his keynote address highlighted that The Bank will continue to foster and expand on partnerships including this unique partnership between the IsDB UNESCO and our member countries as we continue to provide support to increase their competitiveness by harnessing the power of Science Technology and Innovation Dr Hayat Sindi Senior Advisor to the President of the IsDB on STI underlined that The profile will in addition to helping the Republic of Mozambique develop an overarching National STI Policy strengthen capabilities to produce accurate STI information for evidencebased decision making and help eliminate the persisting gender imbalance in STI Dr NairBedouelle Assistant DirectorGeneral for Natural Sciences shared that For us at UNESCO the project in Mozambique goes beyond the borders of a national project The lessons learnt and process has helped us in building greater coherence in our STI policy response to Member States needs Prof Daniel Daniel Nivagara Minister for Science Technology and Higher Education informed the audience that This example of constructive triangular cooperation with UNESCO and the Islamic Development Bank will put the necessary knowledge and expertise at the service of our countrys progress responding in particular to the urgent needs of the gas industry in the north of the country to respond to the effects of the COVID19 pandemic and to many other basic needs of the economy and society The next step of the UNESOIsDB project is to revise the national STI policy and the action plan for Mozambique For this purpose two online surveys will be implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Science Technology and Higher Education Links Concept note of the event PDF Mapping Research and Innovation in the Republic of Mozambique English and Portuguese UNESCO Global Observatory of Science Technology and Innovation Policy Instruments GOSPIN Islamic Development Bank and UNESCO strengthen cooperation to support Science Technology and Innovation policymaking in Mozambique and Uzbekistan For more information please contact ktzinovaunescoorg

UNESCO-European Union Initiative trained Media Professionals in NampulaÍDIA EM NAMPULA

In the framework of CoronaVirusFacts UNESCOEU project UNESCO under the leadership of government Information Cabinet GABINFO and in partnership with the National Institute of Health INS the National Journalist Union SNJ and the Institute of Social Communication of Southern Africa MISA trained 30 Journalists and media professionals of Community radios of Nampula and Cabo Delgado provinces The event took place on 19 November 2020 at Milenio Hotel in Nampula city It focused on disinfodemic ethics of Journalists and media professionals in the context of Covid19 These practices being valid for cholera and malaria it is also expected that journalists contribute to a larger health awareness raising campaign throughout Mozambique This support to journalists education and protection will contribute to promoting quality reporting and fighting against disinformation and misinformation with regard to COVID19 This improvement of professional journalistic standards is essential to bring out the potential of media systems to foster democracy dialogue and sustainable development The UNESCO project CoronavirusFacts is funded by the European Union the project supports professional diverse and independent medias capacity to report on the pandemic strengthens local factchecking organizations to debunk misinformation and empowers youth and other citizens to critically process what they read and hear linked to COVID19

Official Launch of the Global Education Monitoring Report 2020 in the Republic of Mozambique

Today October 7 2020 from 11 AM to 1 PM in the Meeting Room of the Ministry of Education and Human Development MINEDH the official ceremony of the launch of the Global Education Monitoring Report 2020 2020 GEMR was held The Global Education Monitoring Report has been produced annually since 2015 as part of the monitoring of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development more precisely in the education sector Education 2030 GEMR has a dual mandate from the Education 2030 Action Framework Monitor the progress of education in the Sustainable Development Goals and Report on the implementation of national and international education strategies to help hold partners accountable for their commitments The theme of the 2020 Report is inclusion and education all without exception It was around this motto that the presentations converged The annual themes are proposed with the aim of motivating national political dialogue and regional peer learning on the issues of SDG 4 Quality Education Highranking individuals such as Her Excellency the Minister of Education and Human Development Dr Carmelita Rita Namashulua Her Excellency the Minister of Gender Children and Social Action Ms Nyelete Mondlane the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Mozambique Ms Myrta Kaulard the UNESCO Representative in Mozambique Mr Paul Gomis Her Excellency the President of the National Statistics Institute Dr Mónica Magaua Her Excellency Deputy Minister for Education Dr Manuel Bazo and many other people attended the event both virtually and in loco

UNESCO Maputo Family get-together: from celebrating birthdays to bidding farewell to some staff

In the context of the offices internal activities especially in regard to the staff welfare the UNESCO Maputo family took a brief break to supply and recharge their energies in a different way through a mix and mingle event This event was also a special moment to commemorate and celebrate the birthdays of staff members as well as bid farewell to two members who have been working with UNESCO Maputo and will embrace new and different challenges Mr Gaye Yatera our interim administrator who has been working with us for approximately 5 months returning to France Paris and Aoife Kenna a junior professional officer who moved to the office of the UN Resident Coordinator The event took place on July 17 2020 Due to the State of Emergency and preventive measures in place in all the country a limited number of staff was authorized to be in the event which was chaired by the UNESCO Maputo Staff Welfare Committee

Technical meeting between the National Institute for Education Development (INDE) and UNESCO in the context of aligning the Primary and Secondary Education Curriculum with the Comprehensive Sexual Education Guide (ESA)

The technical meeting took place at UNESCO on July 8 2020 in which the INDE presented the Matrix of ESA contents elaborated in the context of aligning the curricula of Primary Education and General Secondary Education with the ESA 2018 Guide The final selection of content in particular key topics of ESA to be integrated into the curriculum will be made through consultations with students teachers parents guardians and the community taking into account the age group and the sociocultural factors It is also foreseen the elaboration of a Manual Brochure to support Primary School teachers and later integration of the contents in the curriculum for ESG The UNESCO Representative Paul Gomis stressed that this moment is an opportunity to integrate these contents for a better quality of teaching in the country

Meeting of the Multisectoral Group on Albinism

UNESCO Maputo in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice Constitutional and Religious Rights coordinated the meeting of the Multisectoral Group on Albinism on 30 June 2020 The meeting which followed the organization of the PALOP Conference and Training on Albinism aimed at establishing a coordination mechanism to address developmental and human rights challenges that affect persons with albinism in Mozambique and within the PALOP The meeting which was also virtual was attended by the representative of the Ministry of Justice the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights OHCHR civil society organizations Albimoz Amor à Vida Khanimambo and CDI The meeting came up with priorities in the area of albinism which are 1 review the Action Plan on Albinism 2 establish a national coordination mechanism 3 establish a PALOP network on albinism and 4 resource mobilization to address issues affecting PWA People With Albinism

World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development

Threequarters of the worlds major conflicts have a cultural dimension Bridging the gap between cultures is urgent for peace and development Cultural diversity is a driving force of development not only with respect to economic growth but also as a means of leading a fulfilling intellectual moral and spiritual life In 2001 UNESCO adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity and in December 2002 the UN General Assembly in its resolution 57249 declared May 21 to be the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development In the message on the occasion of World Day for Cultural Diversity celebrations Ms Audrey Azoulay DirectorGeneral of UNESCO said this years World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is celebrated in the context of uncertainty and anxiety However by dint of coordinated action original initiatives and creativity this imposed downtime has made it possible to see what is one of humanitys riches our diversity At the end of the same message reaffirmed the UNESCO appeals to all together let us celebrate and support cultural diversity symbol of our humanity

International Arts Education Week

The decision of the 36th session of UNESCOs General Conference in 2011 the week of 2531 was proclaimed as the International Arts Education Week Art in all its diversity is an essential component of a comprehensive education for the full development of the individual Today the skills values and behaviours promoted by arts education are more paramount than ever These competencies creativity collaboration and imaginative problem solving develop resiliency nurture appreciation of cultural diversity and freedom of expressions and cultivate innovation and critical thinking skills Art brings us closer together A painting an artefact a piece of ancestral music speaks volumes about the history of civilizations and the ties that bind them It makes us to feel and to understand what unites humanity in the diversity of its cultures and expressions and thus contributing to our bright and sustainable future The DirectorGeneral of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay on the occasion of the celebrations reaffirmed that UNESCO as the only United Nations agency with a core mandate encompassing culture heritage arts creativity and education is committed to joining forces with its Member States to step up cooperation mobilizing civil society educators and arts professionals to fully harness the potential of both culture and education

Albinism Awareness Day

This year the Albinism Awareness day 13 June 2020 is celebrated under the theme Made to Shine The event was organized under the overall leadership of AlbiMoz a civil society organization of persons with albinism in partnership with the Ministry of Justice Constitutional and Religious Affairs of Mozambique and in collaboration with UNESCO In Mozambique the celebration took place at the Quisse Mavota Secondary School in Maputo city Due to circumstances triggered by the Covid19 the number of attendees was limited to 20 to allow social distancing The Mayor of Maputo City Dr Eneas Comiche the City Councilor of Kamubukwana district Rui Matusse the National Director for Human Rights and Citizenship from the Ministry of Justice Constitutional and Religious Rights Dr Albachir Macassar the Representative of UNESCO Mozambique Mr Paul Gomis the President of Albimoz an active civil society organizations of persons with albinism Mr Williamo Tomás staff of the UN Human Rights office and significant number of persons with albinism attended the event The event was widely covered by the media Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 18 2014 the celebration of the Albinism Awareness day was an opportunity for UNESCO to educate the public on issues of concern to mobilize political will and resources to address developmental and human rights challenges faced by persons with albinism to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity Given the circumstances in which the event occurred UNESCO took the opportunity to support the event by providing masks and alcohol gel for persons with albinism As pointed out by Mr Gomis the State of Emergency triggered by the Covid19 aggravates the discrimination and violations of human rights already faced by persons with albinism particularly women and children In this context many of them have been left behind because their physical appearance already expose them to myths exclusion various degrees of stigmatization and human rights abuse extending from being discriminated and bullied to being killed for their body parts This day is important in Mozambique across Africa and indeed throughout the world Albinism is a rare genetically inherited noncontagious condition resulting in a deficiency of melanin pigment in hair eyes and skin It occurs worldwide however its prevalence tends to be highest in SubSaharan African countries For UNESCO under its mandate to build peace of minds of children women and men a society of tolerance and respect for human rights this day was intended to raise awareness expose and make steps to addressing some of the issues Persons with Albinism face in their lives
