Mapping Research and Innovation in the Republic of Mozambique
A new report on research and innovation in Mozambique was launched on 18 February by UNESCO the Islamic Development Bank IsDB and the Government of Mozambique It is the 9th volume of UNESCOs Global Observatory of Science Technology and Innovation Policy Instruments GOSPIN country profiles series The publication is the result of a joint effort by UNESCO and the Islamic Development Bank IsDB to support Member States in strengthening national Science Technology and Innovation STI systems and build robust evidencebased and inclusive STI policies The publication Mapping Research and Innovation in the Republic of Mozambique available in English and Portuguese describes the STI landscape in Mozambique and identify areas for strategic investment in STI in the country The study provides evidence and data for the revision of the national STI policy and strategy as part of the countrys transition from a lowincome country to a lower middleincome status It includes a list of key recommendations for STI policy development and STI investment notably in three strategic sectors STEM and STI policy Oil and Gas and Agriculture The study was developed based on UNESCOs GOSPIN methodology analyzing STI systems in different national contexts Ten volumes of the GOSPIN country profile series were published providing key information on STI governing bodies legal frameworks and policy instruments The publication was launched in the presence of His Excellency Dr Bandar M H Hajjar President Islamic Development Bank highlevel officials from UNESCO HQ and Maputo Office the IsDB the Minister of Science Technology and Higher Education and other highlevel government officials and representatives of STI institutions in the country In total around 150 participants joined the launch event His Excellency Dr Bandar MHHajjar in delivering his keynote address highlighted that The Bank will continue to foster and expand on partnerships including this unique partnership between the IsDB UNESCO and our member countries as we continue to provide support to increase their competitiveness by harnessing the power of Science Technology and Innovation Dr Hayat Sindi Senior Advisor to the President of the IsDB on STI underlined that The profile will in addition to helping the Republic of Mozambique develop an overarching National STI Policy strengthen capabilities to produce accurate STI information for evidencebased decision making and help eliminate the persisting gender imbalance in STI Dr NairBedouelle Assistant DirectorGeneral for Natural Sciences shared that For us at UNESCO the project in Mozambique goes beyond the borders of a national project The lessons learnt and process has helped us in building greater coherence in our STI policy response to Member States needs Prof Daniel Daniel Nivagara Minister for Science Technology and Higher Education informed the audience that This example of constructive triangular cooperation with UNESCO and the Islamic Development Bank will put the necessary knowledge and expertise at the service of our countrys progress responding in particular to the urgent needs of the gas industry in the north of the country to respond to the effects of the COVID19 pandemic and to many other basic needs of the economy and society The next step of the UNESOIsDB project is to revise the national STI policy and the action plan for Mozambique For this purpose two online surveys will be implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Science Technology and Higher Education Links Concept note of the event PDF Mapping Research and Innovation in the Republic of Mozambique English and Portuguese UNESCO Global Observatory of Science Technology and Innovation Policy Instruments GOSPIN Islamic Development Bank and UNESCO strengthen cooperation to support Science Technology and Innovation policymaking in Mozambique and Uzbekistan   For more information please contact ktzinovaunescoorg

UNESCO-European Union Initiative trained Media Professionals in NampulaÍDIA EM NAMPULA
In the framework of CoronaVirusFacts UNESCOEU project UNESCO under the leadership of government Information Cabinet GABINFO and in partnership with the National Institute of Health INS the National Journalist Union SNJ and the Institute of Social Communication of Southern Africa MISA trained 30 Journalists and media professionals of Community radios of Nampula and Cabo Delgado provinces  The event took place on 19 November 2020 at Milenio Hotel in Nampula city It focused on disinfodemic ethics of Journalists and media professionals in the context of Covid19 These practices being valid for cholera and malaria it is also expected that journalists contribute to a larger health awareness raising campaign throughout Mozambique   This support to journalists education and protection will contribute to promoting quality reporting and fighting against disinformation and misinformation with regard to COVID19 This improvement of professional journalistic standards is essential to bring out the potential of media systems to foster democracy dialogue and sustainable development The UNESCO project CoronavirusFacts is funded by the European Union the project supports professional diverse and independent medias capacity to report on the pandemic strengthens local factchecking organizations to debunk misinformation and empowers youth and other citizens to critically process what they read and hear linked to COVID19
