Working with Communities in UNESCO Designated Sites: the Role of visitors Centres
The 3rd regional workshop on the Role of Visitor Centres in UNESCO Designated Sites was held in Ercolano Italy from 29 September to 2 October 2021 This years meeting brought together 23 professionals from different sites across Europe to explore how to meaningfully engage with communities in UNESCO designated sites and how visitor centres can contribute to such a process while supporting the broader management goals of World Heritage properties Biosphere Reserves and Global Geoparks The Role of Visitor Centres in UNESCO Designated Sites is an intersectoral and interdisciplinary initiative launched in 2018 by the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe which includes the organisation of thematic workshops aimed at promoting exchange driving innovation developing capacities and reinforcing networking cooperation in the region

A bright person is one way of describing Chiara Marchina Currently a research technician at the University of Paduas Department of Land Environment Agriculture and Forestry Chiara participated in the inaugural 2017 MAB Youth Forum organised by the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe as a youth delegate of the Po Delta Biosphere Reserve Following this she and other young people from the Veneto and EmiliaRomagna regions in the Po Delta Biosphere Reserve created MY Delta Association MAB Youth Delta She was selected and accompanied by UNESCO as the Po Delta Biosphere Reserve representative at the 7th Economic and Social Council Youth Forum in 2018

The COVID19 pandemic has disrupted routines and regular activities at every level of our society Likewise plans dedicated to implementing the SDGs worldwide slowed down due to the health crisis There is now a need for a strong coordinated and innovative approach for building back better after the emergency inclusive of the most vulnerable groups and centred around nature conservation Scientists have been adamant about the link among the destruction of habitats biodiversity loss and the risk of transmission of infectious diseases wildlife and environmental protection is key to preventing future pandemics A unique and powerful solution in this sense is UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme

The Fondazione Santagata for the Economics of Culture has just released the report of a survey conducted with the support of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe in order to assess the impact of the first 5 workshops conducted under the initiative International Academy on UNESCO Designations and Sustainable Development 20152019 During this fruitful experience the Academy convened approximately 130 professionals working for UNESCO designated sites from about 50 countries across the world and generated evident positive impact on capacities to contribute to local sustainable development both directly and indirectly
