National Workshop on Overcoming Water Related Data Barriers Towards Sustainable Development

On 21 October 2018, the UNESCO Chair for Water Resources, in partnership with the UNESCO Khartoum Office, UNICEF, UN Environment, Ministry of Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity (MoWR), Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and Ministry of Higher Education, organized National Workshop on Overcoming Water Related Data Barriers Towards Sustainable Development. The event took place in the Global Conference Center of the University of Medical Science and Technology, Khartoum Sudan, and attracted about 80 participants from different states of Sudan.


The opening ceremony of the workshop was honored by H.E. Mr. Musa Omer Abu Al-Gasim, the State Minister and Director of Dams Implementation Unit in the MoWR, H.E. Dr. Pavel Kroupkine, UNESCO Representative to Sudan, H.E. Dr. Atila Uras, UN Environment Representative to Sudan, and many distinguished scholars and water professionals. In his speech, Mr. Musa Omer Abu Al-Gasim briefed the audience on ongoing Water Atlas project to determine water supply gaps for fulfillment within scope of Zero Thirst Project, stressed on the importance of data collection and processing, and thanked UNESCO and other partners for a good collaboration with the Ministry. Dr. Pavel Kroupkine briefed on the history of initiating IWRM Network with the UNESCO Chair for Water Resources and thanked the MoWR for their great cooperation.  Dr. Atila Uras recalled to the necessity of developing scientific environment  that allow IWRM data availability and sharing between professionals. Prof. Hassan Abbas, the Vice Chancellor at Omdurman Islamic University, Prof. Eltayeb Onsa, the Director of the UNESCO Chair for Water Resources and Dr. Muna Musnad, the coordinator at the Chair, welcomed participants completing the opening session.

The first technical session on Water Related Data Challenges and Policies was chaired by Dr. Osman Eltom and included presentations from Sudan Metrological Authority, National Information Center, Water Basin Directorate in MoWR, National Research Center, UN Environment, UNICEF, UNESCO Chair for Water Resources and Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources.


The second and final session on Road Map was chaired by Dr. Maha Abdel-Gafar and included outlines of presentations summary, made by Dr. Tarig El-Gamri from National Research Center. This was followed by group work, presentations of groups, and discussions.  Prof. Siddig Eissa announced final recommendations, where the participants agreed on the necessity of a joint platform for all water stakeholders, establishment of a committee for creating a policy for Water Data Management, which has to complement and strengthen the Data Management System managed by Higher Council for Environment.
