The First Community Learning Center Inauguration in North Kordofan

On 12 September 2018, the UNESCO Khartoum, in collaboration with the Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture (NatCom), National Council for Literacy and Adult Education (NCLAE),  Ministry of Education (MoE), UNESCO Institute for Life Long Learning(UIL) in Hamburg, Germany,  and UNESCO Chair for Woman in Science and Technology organized a 3-day visit to the newly established community learning center (CLC) at Om Sayala administrative unit in locality of Bara, North Kordofan State.


A CLC in general is a community-based premise containing different media files with knowledge and tools making these media files accessible for people. Media files could be in form of books, electronic books, audio and video records, knowledge giving games, etc. The CLC represents a modern variant of a traditional library.

In rural regions of the developing countries, the power supply has to be ensured specifically. In Sudanese context, solar power panes could be used for energy supply for rural CLCs.

The CLCs present one of the possible ways for increasing access of vulnerable people to modern knowledge, and this is important for Sudan, where 20% of men and 40% of women cannot read.


In particular, Om-Sayala is considered to have the highest rate of illiteracy in the locality among young women and girls. Rural communities in those areas, although willing to educate their girls, have many barriers for this in their every day’s life. For example, girls’ schools could be out of access of the communities geographically, somewhere 30 kilometres away. Etc.

Establishing CLCs in local communities could help to

Increase access of girls and women to education, including advanced education.

Facilitate education to girls and young women at their locations through literacy classes for girls and young mothers (i.e. non-formal education).

Enhance the learning capacities of rural women and empower them to contribute to their society development via acquiring relevant knowledge from CLC’s learning materials.

Utilize ICT and other modern facilities for educating girls and women.
