Director-General condemns killing of journalist Zia-Ur-Rehman Farooqi in Pakistan

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has condemned the killing of journalist Zia-Ur-Rehman Farooqi, in the Khanewal district of Pakistan’s Punjab province on 28 April.
I condemn the killing of Zia-Ur-Rehman Farooqi. Journalists should not need to put their lives on the line in exercise their profession. I call on the authorities to take action to safeguard press freedom and the universal right to freedom of expression, notably by ensuring that those responsible for the killing of Mr Farooqi are brought to justice.

Farooqi, the correspondent of the Urdu-language 7 News channel in Khanewal district, was shot in the head when several assailants attacked the car he was travelling in with other media workers who escaped unharmed. Farooqi was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
