Director-General calls urges investigation into the killing of journalist Federico “Ding” Gempesaw in the Philippines

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has condemned the killing of reporter Federico “Ding” Gempesaw, in the City of Cagayan de Oro, Philippines, on 29 June.

I condemn the killing of Federico Gempesaw. Journalists play a central part in fostering the right to information. Their killing instills terror that can lead to self-censorship, narrowing the scope for informed democratic debate. It is therefore of paramount importance that those responsible for this crime be brought to trial

Federico “Ding” Gempesaw, a political commentator on privately owned local radio Radio Natin, was shot at close range by two masked gunmen outside of his home in the Carmen neighbourhood of Cagayan De Oro.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
